Alice Neel(1900-1984) was an American artist who is considered on of the greatest portrait artists of the 20th century. Her portraits, known for their expressive line and color, ranged from images of friends and family to fellow artists and strangers. Traumatized by the loss of two daughters, Neel’s work dealt heavily with the themes of motherhood, loss, and anxiety. Neel’s career really gained momentum towards the end of the 1960’s, where she became a feminist icon.
