THE HOTDOG
A New York food staple, the Hot Dog has a long an multi-continental history. There are theories that the first sausage was created during Nero’s reign in Rome by his chef Gaius. However, we definitely know that German sausages, also know as Frankfurter or Weiners, have been around as early as the 13th century. German immigrants in New York were the first to sell Frankfurter or Weiners from a pushcart in the 1860’s creating the hot dog by placing the sausages into a bun. However, the hot dog gained country wide fame through a Polish immigrant by the name of Nathan Handweker. He started the renowned Nathan’s Famous hot dog stand in 1915. By the time of the Depression the brand was famous throughout the United stated for the food easy portability and cheapness.
