The Bowery Ballroom (6 Delancey Street) was built in 1929 just before the Stock Market Crash that launched the Great Depression. The building stood vacant until after WWII, when it became a high-end retail store. For the next thirty years, it housed a jewelry store, a haberdashery, and Treemark Shoes (the sign for Treemark is still visible on the building today). However, when the Lower East Side fell into decline, these high end-stores were replaced with carpet and lighting stores until 1998 when the building was converted to a music venue. The Bowery Ballroom still stands today and much of the 1929 construction remains.
