The Guggenheim (1071 Fifth Avenue) is an art museum on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The full name of the building—The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum—houses an ever growing collection of impressionist, post impressionist, and modern art. The museum moved to the landmark building—designed by Frank Lloyd Write—in 1959. The building is designed as a long continuous spiral from the ground floor to the top along the outer wall. The idea behind this, was to create a new way of viewing art. Most museums of the time were set up as a series of interconnected rooms that forced a visitor to retrace their steps when exiting. Wright challenged this idea with the building by having the visitor take an elevator to the top floor and continue down the ramp to the atrium, which would have the last work of art.
