Henri-Émile-Benoît Matisse (1869–1954) was a French Artist draughtsman, printmaker, sculptor, and a painter. Initially he was part of the Fauve moment, but the 1920s he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of classical French Painting.
Matisse was born in Le Chateau-Cambrésis in northern France, and was the oldest son of a prosperous grain merchant. He first started painting in 1889 after his mother brought him art supplies while he was on the mend from appendicitis. From that point on, he decided to become a painter, much to the disappointment of his father. In 1891 he went to Paris to study at the Académie Julian
