John Singer Sargent(1856–1925) was an American artist, considered the best portrait painter of his generation. His work is characterized by remarkable technical skill, specifically his ability to draw with a brush. In a time when the art world was focused on Impressionism, Fauvism, and Cubism, Sargent practiced his own version of realism. This garnered much praise and much criticism as well.
