Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio(1571–1610) was an Italian Painter who had a formative influence on Baroque painting. His work is characterized by realistic imagery with a dramatic use of lighting. He took chiaroscuro and made it the dominate stylistic element by darkening the shadow and putting the subject in a strong shaft of light.
