The Unisphere is a 120ft stainless steel representation of the Earth. It located in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, and is one of the borough’s most iconic symbols. Commissioned to celebrate the beginning of the space age, the sculpture was constructed for the 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair. The theme was “Peace Through Understanding”, and the sphere was mean to represent the man’s achievement in shrinking the globe through unified exploration of the universe. Designed by Gilmore D. Clarke, the sphere is centered in a circular reflecting pool with jets. Around the globe are orbits that are believed the represent the tracks of the firs men in space.
